화성 남반구 맨틀 속 '따뜻한 영역' 발견… 애리조나대 연구팀 조석 단층촬영으로 포착
미국 애리조나대학교의 알렉산더 번(Alexander Byrne)이 이끄는 연구팀이 '조석 단층촬영(tidal tomography)' 기법으로 화성 남반구 맨틀의 열 이상 현상을 관측했다. 이 지하 영역은 나머지 맨틀보다 약 200~400℃ 높은 것으로 나타났으며, 연구팀은 이 온난 영역이 화성이 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 어떻게 변화해왔는지에 대한 정보를 담고 있을 가능성이 있다고 보고 있다.
